ICS + Home network trouble

Hi, having trouble networking two XPProSP2 PCs at the mother in laws. Have
run network setup on both, uninsdtalled all firewalls, followed carey's site
to the letter etc. Still no joy. Both PC's can see each other in View
workgroup computers but only one can actually access the other one(host could
see client). Changed Host/client the other way round and ran all again, New
Host could now access the net but again new client could not, new host still
cannot access old host/new client. I get a "do not have access rights" error
every time. Strangely though with the old host/client setup the client DID
have the ability to connect/disconnect the ICS Connection and could make the
internet connection, it just couldnt actually browse the web or anything.
I've followed several ideas from this newsgroup so far but nothing working.

Network is thru network cards and crossover cable.

If anyone has any ideas or needs more info I'll be on here a lot i think! ;o)

Billy,

The "...access rights..." error can have several causes. Let's try to work back
thru the changes you have made, first, then we'll get to the causes.

Please start by providing ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

Billy,

I really need IPConfigs from both computers. Manual changes, while appearing
like a good idea, may hinder diagnosis and repair.

Please provide up to date ipconfig listings for both computers, then refrain
from making any further changes unless requested to do so. This will help us
diagnose your problem much easier.

OK, Billy,

Now let's enumerate the problems of each computer.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is keyed, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from both computers, please, with both computers powered up, connected,
and online.

NP, Billy. Your symptoms are relatively simple. Let's see if the solution is
too.

Firstly, Alpha can't resolve internet addresses (www.yahoo.com for instance).
Try enabling DHCP on Alpha (automatically get ip addresses and dns server
addresses).

Next, Beta can't view shares on Alpha. Several possibilities there, we'll start
with the most common. First, permissioning and firewalls.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS consistently set on each computer.

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, check the Local Security Policies (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

On XP Pro with SFS disabled, if you set the above Local Security Policy to
"Guest only", enable the Guest account, using Start - Run - "cmd" - type "net
user guest /active:yes" in the command window. If "Classic", setup and use a
common non-Guest account on all computers. Whichever account is used, give it
an identical, non-blank password on all computers.

On XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the Guest account is
enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run - "cmd", then type
"net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure that the password
for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control userpasswords2"; select Guest,
click Reset Password, click OK without entering a new password.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (WF, or third party)? If so,
you need to configure them for file sharing. Make sure that the WF File and
Printer Sharing exception is enabled on both computers. Firewall configurations
are a very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Next, check for a browser conflict between the computers. I"m not talking about
Internet Explorer here. The browser is the program that allows any computer to
see any other computer on the LAN. On a 2 computer LAN, you should have only 1
computer running the browser.

Make sure the browser service is running on one of the computers. Control Panel
- Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Stop, then
Disable the browser service on the other computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power both back on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status".

Make sure both computers list the same master browser.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win95/w95brows.mspx>

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa], value restrictanonymous.
<http://www.microsoft.com/windows200...2000/techinfo/reskit/en-us/regentry/46688.asp>

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296403

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry
patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor's File menu) to apply it to the
registry.

Billy,

If you've enabled Simple File Sharing (on both computers? You have to be
consistent here!), then that will account for the "Error = 5" (access denied) in
browstat. With Simple File Sharing, you at best (with Guest enabled) have
non-administrative access, which will not get you access to the registry thru
the network.

Is Guest enabled on both computers(with identical (or null) password on each)?
Using "net user guest /active:yes" - NOT the Control Panel applet?

Did you check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) -
User Rights Assignment settings, as noted above?

Oh and please don't disable Windows Firewall on Beta - if it's connected to the
internet, you need to protect it. Enable Windows Firewall, enable the File and
Printer Sharing exception, and ensure that the scope of the exception is set to
the subnet.

okay chuck i know we are getting somewhere,
i have now disabled sfs on both computers and double checked all the user
rights assignments, guest IS in access this computer on both pcs and not in
deny.
guest is enabled on both and using a $null password.
Windows firewall is back on( i was a little wary of turning it off and
telling everyone on usenet anyhow! lol) exceptions : file and printer
sharing, internet explorer, remote assistance, UPnP framework and windows
messenger all allowed(checked) and remote desktop unchecked.
Now shares are both visible&editable from both computers. part one solved i
think.

Alpha still has trouble browsing the internet, but can still enable/disable

Billy,

If you disable SFS, you need to use a Classic Sharing and Security Model in the
Local Security Policy, and you need to setup a common administrative account,
with identical non-blank password, on both computers. If your LSP is set to
"Guest only", then you're still using Guest authentication. Remember to enable
your administrative account for network access, using "net user (accountname)
/active:yes", on both computers.

WRT Alpha not being able to access the internet, do you still have DHCP
disabled? You need to enable DHCP for ip address and for DNS server addresses.
I see no mention of DNS servers in the ipconfig.

DNS!!! i am such an idiot, i did the ipconfig /all on beta to get the dns
servers off my internet account, inserted those into alphas lan/tcpip
properties and voila, internet works on both, file sharing works on both and
most importantly the mother in law isnt pi55ed off. Chuck if we ever meet i
owe you a pint at least, tyvm and sorry to be such a tool and take up so much
of your time. Problem solved ;o)
