ICS good or bad...??? And does it work...???

Hi all....

This is my first post in a newsgroup so someone please reply :p

I have installed ICS on a win2k comp which has allowed me to share my aol
broadband connection over the network with my xp machine... I have tested it
and loads of things works well... I can listen to music streams from radio 1
site... I can browse the internet using IE... I can even play counterstrike
which is one of the coolest, online-games ever... I have done the same
connection before with two XP machines... Ping works too...

BUT... both ICS connections seem to have the same problem... Some sites
won't load... I haven't fully tested it yet... So I am sure I will find more
things that won't work and make a more concreate problem question... But wht
I have tried is:

- Searched for "ICS problems microsoft" in google and when I select the link
to the microsoft support page... Well it doesn't load... Infact none of the
microsoft support links worked... Even copying the link didn't work...

Can someone tell me why it is that some sites like
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238135/EN-US/ will not load with ICS but
pretty much most other sites will... I just set up an ICS aol broadband
connection for someone and instantly encountered this problem so I am a
little worried that that certain someone will get annoyed if more things
prop up...

O and shareaza doesn't work either... And I think one of my heft downloads
stopped half way..

Is ICS any good...?? Does it work..?? Can I get shareaza working over
it...?? and why is microsoft support pages having the most problem with it's
own creation - 'ICS'...

Thanx for any help guyz.. n girls of corse...

ICS works under some restricted circumstances, but has problems working with
setups that many of us have.

For example, if you are running firewall software on the system that
directly connects to the Internet, you wil probably have to lower its level
of protection for ICS to support browsing from a connected machine.

Similarly, if you use any kind of VPN, you will probably bump into an
incomapatibility with ICS.

A far more usable configuration is to get a router (wired or wireless) and
connect that to your high-speed Internet feed (Cable modem, DSL, etc), and
support all you systems from the router.

The only advantage that i can find for ICS is that it is free. You get what
you pay for. :)

I had a lot of problems browsing using ICS because the MTU values were not
set correctly ( I am using 56k dialup, broadband not available until may
2005) I found a program called Speed Guide TCP optimizer for Windows. I ran
it on both of my networked computers (one w98se pc with 3 com 10/100 network
card attached to a Wireless access point) (the other an xp laptop with
wireless network card) and it solved all my problems!

Thanks guys... I was going to accept "You get what you pay for" but lets face
it, in the IT world, if you really look hard enough the answer should be out
there.

Thanks Carole for the Speed Guide TCP optimizer advice... I will definatly
have to look into it when I get my broadband back up again... AOL is messing
me about a lot but I can't find it in my heart to leave them... And if the
optimizer doesn't work I will keep going until I find the answer.. The truth
is out there.. Ha..

Thanks again everyone.
