ICS Dial Up problems

Dear network gurus,

I am running XP Pro on a home machine that is networked to a Linksys
Switched 2-Port Print Server; also networked is a HP LaserJet printer,
HP Color Inkjet printer, and a Win98SE computer.

I am using Internet Connection Sharing and dialup to connect to the
internet. My XP Pro box is the server and my Win98SE machine is the
client. No problem dialing out and connecting to the internet from the
XP Pro box. The problem I am having is when both machines are up and
running, the 98 machine will consistently and automatically start
dialing up to connect to the internet via the XP machine. How do I
prevent this from happening; what program(s) are causing this? I ran
MSCONFIG and did not see any programs that could be causing the 98 box
to automatically dial up.

Also, how can I disconnect the connection from the 98 box without having
to disconnect the connection from the XP box?

Thanks much for your help and expertise.

Hi,

The Blaster virus is known to cause the first problem. Do a search looking
for "msblast.exe"

The second problem is usually caused by not using the "XP networking wizard"
on the client machine. XP includes an "Internet gateway" which puts a
connect/disconnect icon in the notification area on the client machine.
This facility also relies on the service "Universal plug and play device
host". running on the host machine. Many people suggest disabling this
service but a side affect is that you will not get the connect/disconnect
icon on the client machine!

Hope this helps

Dave,

Thanks for your quick reply.

The first problem is not due to the Blaster virus as this problem existed many
months prior to the virus; I also have Norton AV running and no virus has been
found.

Thanks again for your time and expertise.
