Icons getting lost

The problem I have is icons for certain apps, like Word, and Acrobat Reader
just go away. I used to blame this on a backup/restore cycle I did to defrag
a partition, (because the short name paths could change, and some icons
apparently use short name paths), but now it's happening with just normal
usage, and the installation of games, and other applications that shouldn't
be trying to mess with .DOC or .PDF file type associations.

So far the only fix seems is to re-install Word or Acrobat Reader.

In addition, the icons for inserted CD / DVD - roms go bad (wrong ones), and
the fix for this is to delete the icon cache file (no documention mentions
that this even exists):

\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db

The icon for Word.Document (Office XP and beyond I suspect) is found under
the registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8\DefaultIcon

If you notice, it is linked to the Installer folder package used to install
Office. Check to see that the folder and file exists.

Same goes for Acrobat (Version 7):

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.7\DefaultIcon

Thanks, I've added this info to my "stuff.txt" file, where I keep all my
little tidbits for installation and problem solving info.
