Howdy - how can I put an icon for Defender in my system tray ???
I actually forgot that I have this program until I happened to be browsing
through my programs from the start menu !
If there was an icon on the system tray , it would remind me to check
Defender
My OS is XP if there is a way to produce an icon for Defender.

1) go to Help, About, in Windows defender. If the top version number is not
1.1.1347, revisit the download center and download the newest version--run
it, it will upgrade.

Once that's done, go to Tools, Options, scroll down, and you'll find an
option setting for icon display.

Remember to re-select advanced Spynet membership, if desired, as well.

Howdy again - I downloaded the newer version and the icon is now in my sys
tray but .... I now have two Defender programs. The new one has a (2) next to
it.
Should I delete the first Defender and if so , how ??

Is this in the start menu?

First--try clicking on the old one--the one without the two. See if that
starts Windows Defender. If it does, I'd right click the one with the 2 in
it and choose delete.

Thank you for this hint. It worked for me too after I upgraded to version
1.1.1347. One question: why was the upgrade not made automatically (I found
out that I was using version 1.1.1051 ...).

Reading other messages, I see you are in good shape. I believe that a
message to alert 1051 users about the newer code will eventually appear. I
have some installs I am leaving that way just to see how this works. The
actual bugfixes between 1051 and 1347 are relatively few--and we can tell
folks about the new download when they mention an issue that is changed--as
you did.

Until last week or so, there was a significant issue with definition updates
failing, which was taking substantial energy. there's every evidence that
is solved now, so perhaps other changes will go forward.
