I stumbled upon this amazing app last week. I've been meaning to tell
the group, but kept forgetting. This is great opportunity to do so.

Liquid Icon XP, found here:
http://www.webattack.com/get/liquidicon.shtml

The neat thing is that it's a no-install, one file program. I'm not
allowed to install stuff at the office but really needed an icon
editor, so this follows the letter of the law re installing yet allows
me to have something to use at work.

Despite the name, it works at the office where I have Windows 2000,
and at home where I have Win98SE.

A note of potential warning, the icons I extracted and then modified
with this didn't come out as crisp and clear as they might have though
that sometimes isn't a consideration. At the office, I just needed 2
icons that were identical but colour-coded differently, so
"prettiness" didn't matter. However, I'm not sure if this will always
be the case as I've only used it so far this one time.

Also, I extracted the ico file from an exe and not a dll. So I'm not
sure if it will do that.

Icona5 will do both and it is an icon editor. It's very good but I
can't find reference to it on the internet. I can easily post it to
alt.binaries.freeware, if you're interested in using it. I find it
very versatile. Zipped up it comes to about 307kb.

Good luck!

Take your pick. Didn't bother checking them all but I suspect there is a
free one in the lot. There are certainly shareware ones with a trial period
sufficient to extract your icon.

Excellent, this is a new site so it's not a question of it
disappearing. Jans has a lot of good programs so that's good that
they're not gone. Wonder why no google search brought this page up??
Hmmm .... <g>
