ICMP & Network Browser failure

I have recently had 3 windows 2000 servers (sp4) have problems with ICMP and
network browsing. Two servers went faulty after running a windows update. The
third server went faulty in the middle of operation.

The problem is that these servers are unable to ping or be pinged and they
are also unable to browse the network, ie you can't access them via UNC paths
and they can't access other machines via unc. HOWEVER - the TCP/IP is working
normally - for example you can access web sites/proxy/smtp/pop3 etc without
any problem.

Anyone got any idea how I can even begin to figure this one out? I would
really like to avoid having to rebuid or reinstall.

I have just discovered that the server that went faulty during operation had
actually been infected with something. I have since cleaned the machine
however I am still not able to ping or browse the network?

Post the output of ipconfig /all and route print from one of the non-working
servers and from a working one.

Some more info on this, when I restart I can ping the machine right up to the
point it is 'applying computer settings'. I have just reinstalled TCP/IP but
still no go.

I've just now completed a reinstall from original CD (as apposed to a fresh
install) and the problem still persists. Seems like there must be something
in the registry causing the issue.
