I386 folder and Service Packs

I like most folks place the I386 folder on a local drive.
How do service packs and hotfixes work with I386. When
you install a new component, does the OS first go to I386
then to service packs and hotfixes?

Hi

No, it goes first to the %windir%\servicepackfiles\i386 folder that
a service pack installation creates.

No, it goes first to the %windir%\servicepackfiles\i386 folder that

I have no such folder "servicepackfiles" in my Windows
directory, despite having installed all servicepacks 1
through 4.

I do have the i386 folder on a partition different from
where Windows is. And usually I slipstream a new servicepack
into that folder prior to patching the OS itself. Could
maybe Windows have seen this and figured that once is
enough?

Actually I think I copied all the installation files into a
folder named W2K and ran the original installation from
there, a habit I picked up when using W98.
