Trying to install Windows XP Pro on top of Windows XP
Home. No connection to the internet (on purpose.) Booted
from the 6 floppy disks downloaded from microsoft. All
the java files (clspack.exe, javacypt.dll, msawt.dll,
dx3j.dll and some others), it tells me it can't load
them. I escape to skip them. Startup starts and I get the
screen that says I've got 39 minutes to go, and I get an
error message: Failed: E:\I386\asms. Error message: The
parameter is incorrect. At Microsoft's troubleshooting,
it says I can boot with a Windows 98 floppy in the A:
drive, and copy I386 to the C drive. Will this work? I
tried booting from my OEM of Home and it keeps trying to
run Professional Setup, gives me an error, restarts and
goes back to running pro setup, error, restart, ad
nauseum. Is this enough information for some help?

If your existing Windows XP Home Edition had SP1 installed, you should
only use a "retail upgrade version" of Windows XP Pro with SP1 included.
Is this the case in your situation?

I'm using a disk that the college I'm attending provided
me that is licensed through Microsoft. When I installed
the pro on my machine, I had to connect to the internet
to get SP1 before it would complete the install. When my
husband tried installing on his machine, without
internet, it asks for an SP1. The disk says "retail." I
downloaded the floppy install disks that say "Floppy boot
for Professional with SP1."

The floppies got me further into the install, except that
all the java files came up as unable to install, so I hit
escape to skip them. That's when I came up against
i386/asms error.
