I understand, that if your product is under 12 months old
you are entitled 2 free support incidents, click of help

might want to check it out first. I i'm pretty sure that
is right. As for SMART ALEX your comments aren't very
helpful really are they! GOOD LUCK

Wow! This has created more controversy that the hanging chads in Florida!

To answer some questions. Yes, I do have Norton AV. I don't have it set up
for auto-scan though.
Don't have Quick Books but I do have Quicken Home & Biz
Definitely have Acrobat and Acrobat Distiller and PDF Writer.
This give any clues.?

As far as getting rid of any programs in the background I do that all the
time. I also set up msconfig not to load that stuff and I often go to
Processes to see what's running.

As far as Norton is concerned...with the number o virus attacks I get a day,
I wouldn't want to turn it off for second.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

However you needed to have Norton disabled when you installed Office/FrontPage, or some files may
not be installed correctly. This could be part of your current problems, if Norton was running when
you installed FP2003.

In general any anti-virus application should be disabled when installing or upgrading applications.

Re: Norton AV abled/disabled during the Office Update. I THINK I had it
disabled but....I'm not 100% sure.
As far as shutting it off, I know enough to disconnect from the internet but
IF Norton is the culprit in my FP2003 freezing I can't be disconnected all
the time while working on FP. Others depend on my shared connection.

Someone asked if I was logged on as an Administrator. The answer is yes.

I think we're pretty much at a dead end with this...other than maybe
re-installing the Office Update and ensuring that Norton is off while I do.

You mentioned earlier that you "kept the old tower."
Is this a new machine with a clean install of XP, or an upgrade to XP from an older operating
System??

Nobody suggested such a ridiculous thing. It was suggested that you make
sure your AV was disabled when installing FP.

Personally, I would never use Norton for anything, but that is just me.

Norton definitely sucks, but there aren't a whole lot of choices out there
for anti-virus and firewall security. So I have it installed, but have
disabled ALL of the automatic features that it has. Unfortunately, it took
me several hours to figure out how to disable some of them, which Symantec,
in its' "infinite wisdom" has decided I shouldn't have control over, even
though it's my machine... Required several registry hacks, deleting some
DLLs, etc, but it now does WHAT I want it to WHEN I want it to, and it's not
a problem.

The irony of all this is that applications that use the Internet, like
FrontPage, are often clobbered by these well-meaning protectors that we have
developed over the years. Yet, people demand that their software works
easily without any interference from them. So, we end up having these 2
opposite requirements:

1. Our computer must be safe from intrusion without our knowing how or why.
2. Our software must be easy to use, requiring little or no knowledge of how
or why.

And the hackers and virus-writers are constantly testing the limits of the
current protection, thereby creating a vicious cycle from which there seems
to be no means of escape. If we disable our protection software, our other
software requires a greater level of understanding to use. If we enable our
protection software, our other software is often affected in such a way that
without a greater level of understanding, we are unable to use it. And of
course, our protection software, like the Patriot Act, tends to be difficult
machiavellian, making it difficult to tweak without a greater level of
understanding.

No solutions here. Just observations.

I use AVG by Grisoft.
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
Does exactly what it is supposed to do and nothing else, and it *does not* commandeer your machine.
Even ran it on a PII 166mhz 64mb RAM machine and you couldn't tell it was even running.
imho the best AV program there is.

It's basically a new machine....new Motherboard etc...It's a fresh install
of XP.

As for Norton AV... Kevin mentioned that Norton comandeer's your machine.
I'm with Kevin 100% with his view of this.Thats' my biggest beef with MOST
applications, Microsoft being the worst. We are able to build faster and
faster computer with more and more sophisticated software. I suggest that we
make what we have work more efficiently first. Why build a faster car if the
wheels keep falling off?! (thats my soapbox for the day)

With Norton, I thought I had disabled most automatic goodies...but maybe I
missed something. Also, let me ask again......should I RE-INSTALL the Office
SP (ensuring that Norton is disabled?) Should I UN-install the Office2003
Service Pack? Remember I have Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. installed over
Office 97. Under that there are 8 updates. (this is viewed in my Conrol
Panel Installed Programs)

Is this making sense?

I would leave the office 2003 SP installed. It only installed the portions of itself that apply to
FP 2003. It "inventories" the computer and then determines which parts to install.

Microsoft has a tool named QuickSlice that you can download and run which will show you what running
process is hogging the CPU cycles and causing the machine to freeze. It displays the info in a bar
graph. You can launch the app and minimize it, then maximize it as the machine slows down or locks
up.
The download / install file is available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/evaluation/faq.mspx

It says it is for Windows 2000 and I have used it, but I have *never* ran it on an XP machine. I
**think** it **should** run ok..
Hopefully it will work in XP and can show you where the problem is.

If you try QuickSlice, be advised that the top process or PID 0 is the "system idle" process and
will always run at 100% when nothing is going on.

Steve,

Thanks Steve...
Re...The QuickSlice...how is that different than looking at the Windows Task
Manager Performance Graph. I often do that and see what's eating up my CPU
and RAM. EXAMPLE: I have a Labels Application from SoftKey (Labels Unlimited
1996) that I love but...anytime I move a graphic or even text within that
program...the CPU goes to 100% and stays there and everything locks.

I will try QuickSlice though.

So far, FP2003 has been behaving....but then I haven't been using it as
much. (I've been too busy writing to this forum!:)

I tried the Quick Slice but it doesn't really give me any clues. I have had
FP2003 lock up...the hourglass on forever...and nothing in QS looked
abnormal.

After I get out of Front Page, it won't re-open. I also discovered that
other applicatiosn wont; open either. THEN I tried to re-start it keepings
"saving my settings" forever.

I said this was last post here because I am convinced that this is a Windows
XP problem and I think I should go in that direction.

This post sure generated a LOT of responses. I guess I know how to get
people's attention now!

Thank you for the help and advice
