i use to be able to type the 'shortcuts' when writing emails, and the
emoticons/smileys would appear, but they don't any longer; does anyone know
why they would not appear anymore ?

Using which editor?

I apologize for not being savvy on various terms, but where would I find to
address answer to your 'editor' inquiry ?

Which editor are you using with Outlook to compose messages, its built-in
editor or Word?

The Word editor can do that automatically, but you'll have to teach the
built-in editor.

Click Tools>Options>Spelling>AutoCorrect. In the "Replace" field put ":)".
Then open Character Map (Start>All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Character Map", choose the Garamond or Arial font and locate the
character showing the smiley face. Click it and then click Select, then
Copy. Click back in the AutoCorrect dialogue box "With" field and press
CTRL-V. Click Add. Add as many smileys as you can find in your normal font
files. When you're done, click OK, then OK again. If you've enable
autocorrect in Outlook, you should see your smileys when you type. I just
tried it to make sure it works.
