Hey all I just moved back to school and their lame network and now my windows
live mail won't send. I've tried going through the setup from my email's ISP
back at home but still outgoing mail isn't working. This is the error I'm
getting. Thanks for any and all help!

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Hey Pop', Account:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 207.115.11.17
(207.115.11.17:25), connect error 10060', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

It's called a port 25 block. The basic rule is that in order to use
SMTP on port 25, you must be connected to the same network
as the outgoing mail server.

There are a couple of workarounds:
1. Use webmail.
2. Use a port other than '25' for SMTP, if your mail provider
has a provision for that. I don't think Bellsouth does.
3. Use the school's SMTP server.
4. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores.

You need to edit the Account information and set the SMTP server data to
your school's SMTP server.
When you go home, you'll need to do the same editing setting the SMTP server
back to Mail.Bellsouth.Net with appropriate passwords etc.

So are you saying I can't use the email here at school? From what I
understand you're saying its not sending because my ISP isn't bellsouth or
AT&T at all. I guess I kinda understand what you're saying but don't know
how to go about fixing it. Do I need to talk with IT and use their email
port or something? Sorry if I'm way off...I just really don't care for the
networking side of computers. Thanks so much for all your guys' help.

Well, I gave you four possible workarounds. Which one
do you want to try, or which method do you need more
information about?

If you want to identify the college, I may be able to dig out
their mail server information, or you can talk to the school's
IT department.

Well I know I don't want to do gmail. I get what you're saying about
changing the port and how that may not work but really have no clue what to
change it to. And then I don't know how using the school's server would
help. Right now I'm using webmail to send and its ok. If I go to IT what do
I ask for exactly? Explain options 2 and 3 more if you could. Thanks a lot
for your help and patience!

Why not... it's very good?

Follow the money... ask your ISP.

Let's explore options 2 and 3:
2. Some ISPs offer alternate SMTP ports (other than '25'), such as 587
Since only port 25 is blocked when away from your home ISP, port 587
will work. Unfortunately, Bellsouth is one of the few large ISPs who
doesn't officially offer that option. You might try replacing port 25
with port 587 (Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties, Advanced),
but it is a long shot as to whether this will work. Change it back to 25
if it doesn't work.

3. Use the school's SMTP server. Your school has its own SMTP server.
Let's call it smtp.college.edu. So, in your account setup replace
mail.bellsouth.net with smtp.college.edu. Change only the name of the
outgoing (SMTP) server. If you get an error message, it means the
school's server requires authentication. This is where asking the school IT
department for help comes into the picture, or if I know the school I can
look that information up for you.

I am trying to set up a new computer...everything was going well until I
tapped into Microsoft Mail. I can recieve but not send. I am using Port 587
but keep getting "Server Response 556 Client Authentication Required Use
ESMTP EHLO AND AUTHENTICATION Port 587 No Server Error556 Error # Ox800CCC78"
This is driving me nuts! I just downloaded pics from my father's 80th Bday
and I want to send them out. Can you suggest anything?

You are latching unto someone else's (Jon M.) thread, and I have
no way of knowing how much of that thread applies to your issue.
As a minimum I would need to see a verbatim error message
(copied, not paraphrased). It is always best to start a new thread
for a new issue.

That said, let me make a stab in the dark and advise you to
enable "My server requires authentication", which you will
find by going to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties,
Servers.

try your suggestion and let you know. I posted on this thread since you seem
like you know your stuff...
