I/O device error

alrite all

i got a seagate 160 on my 3rd ide channel on my gigabyte motherboard

ive got files on there it's one partition
last few days whenever i try to access the drive via my computer it seems to hang and not let me view the files

now i keep getting J:/ is not accessible the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

is this v bad? is the drive on the way out?
what should I do?

Any I/O error needs to be taken as a sign of impending doom.


Better back-up any data and start further tests.

err, take it out and see how far it will bounce off a brick wall, or drop it off a high building and see if it bounces, or go to the manufacturers web site of the HD and download & run their diagnostics tool, or go get the UBD as it has even more test tools. Also swap out I/O cables or channels.

ahh bit bad to the mince pies it says:

looks like there is something wrong

the hard drive in question is running off of the IDE RAID controller on the board and appears as ITERAID1

what does it mean by firmware? what firmware?

the os dont recognise the drive as a seagate because of the RAID controller
it gets identified as array or like what the picture said

im fairly sure its the drivers

ive put in another 120gb drive and its doing the same thing

whenever i go into my computer it slows my computer down hardcore

the 160 gb drive now comes up as local drive... this is all messed up now.

i'm going to try a new cable for a start then I don't know what to do next.
