As far as i know there are no free dvd decoders. Most TV cards require them
so they are supplied on their software.

Actually, there is one free one, but it won't play copy protected DVD's.

My XP computer came with the codecs necessary, so I have no problem
but my Win ME computer has a DVD player but did not have the codecs.
I downloaded them here:
Fraunhofer DVD Codecs
Free DVD and AC3 Decoders. These codecs are needed for playing DVD's
on your computer. Free for non-commercial use
http://www.cliprex.com/free_dvd_vid...d,10/order,dmdate_published/ascdesc,DESC.html

My download was back in March and was a slightly smaller download.
No idea if the difference is just more spyware.
I do not recommend you download unless you can remove the tons of muck
that makes it "free". According to my notes, both Ad-Aware and Spybot
missed it.
As I tracked the install, I removed the garbage and the codecs work
perfectly.

I wouldn't touch that download with a bargepole. I just tried it and
puts at least 3 bits of spyware on your machine.

I thought I made that fairly clear.

Not clear enough. I thought that perhaps it installed one piece of
spyware explicitly. According to SpyBot, it installed _151_ seperate
pieces that needed removing.

Even then, SpyBot didn't catch them all, and I had to go in and
manually remove directories and use msconfig to remove start-up
settings. Even when you know what you're doing, this is laborious.

My reference to "tons of muck" should have been a clue.
Yes, it took a few minutes to remove the garbage.
It may be that the updated version has more spyware.
