I need help with Vista/XP an Printing

G

Guest

I truly hope someone can help. I have been spending the last two day in this
discussion group trying to find some answer.
Here Goes:

I have a new Toshiba Laptop with Vista on it. My other 2 computers are
running XP I have a Lexmark Z8350 all in one Printer. Now my other 2
computer work fine file shareing and using the same printer. Over my Linksys
Router.

I can don't make my new laptop work with my network using XP nor can I
Print/share files.

I hope someone can help walk me thru the steps to make all of my computer
work.

Thank you in advance.

Let's start at the beginning. Can the new Vista notebook even 'see' the 2
XP PCs? Are they all in the same Workgroup?

G

Thank you for your respondes: Yes Cari, the same Workgroup has the same name.

Here is the Kicker--I have internet access, and after doing somethings
suggested to me by other MVP's I can now share files. But I am still not
able to use the Printer.

I have done alot of things: Disable Firewalls. down loaded Drivers from
Lexmark.com for the XP computer, and the Vista computer. Plus a few other
things.

Cari or anyone I sincerely hope someone out there can Help me?

I'm having a problem similar to Ric's. Documents on Vista laptop in wireless
network with XP desktop will not print to LTP printer on desktop. File
sharing between the two works fine, access of internet works fine.

I read everything regarding print sharing in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx.
Especially noting the heading, "Accessing a shared printer;" though I had
followed each step, no printing occurred.

This is what does happen: 1. on XP desktop with printer, open printer, and
pause printer (so that print jobs queue up but don't print); 2. print a text
document from, say, Notepad, on the Vista notebook and it seems (from
watching the laptop monitor) to print; 3. the print job shows up in the
opened printer queue on the XP desktop; 4. right click on the print job name
and select properties which shows that the job size is zero bytes.

So an empty print job is being sent and received over the network but not
the real data for printing.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

I am right at this point myself.

Vista Laptop trying to print on a Lexmark attached to a Windows XP PC across
a wireless LAN.

Can see the printers on the Windows XP PC from VISTA and even see the print
queue - but can't print to the printer from Vista.
Like the respondents - have tried everything on the MS page and a few other
things , like adding UDP ports etc.. but no progress.

Thought that it might be a firewall problem and so disabled tat on both
machines - but again nothing changed.

Allan you got that Right....the only reason I don't dump this Vista, is that
it would void my warranty.

Here is the Kicker...Broke down and call the Geek Squad...(geek sqeeks)
they came out...LOL and guess what....thats right .... they spent 2hr's on
it and coold not get it working either...NO CLue...And guess what they said

So I sink slowly into madness, while I know Vista Will WOW me....

Hi Ric,

You know - I am beginning to think that although lots of people are having
this problem... it might actually be a Lexmark problem.
Here's why.
I connected an old HO Deskjet812 to one of the Windows XP Pc's and guess
what... the Vista Laptop works over the wireless network!

No problems with loading the drivers to the Vista Laptop.. nothing like have
to connect a local port with \\computer_name\printer_name or alter IRSstacks
- no problems at all. I have emailed Lexmark and will await their response
with interest!
Vista is so unhelpful though - this may still be the cause and certaoinly
lots of other people can testify to that.

If there are drivers available, stuff works no problem.. drivers are
produced by the hardware manufacturers.. some are doing a better job that
others..

I network to an HP 5150 connected to an XP machine, and IT DOES WORK..

Take it up with Lexmark.. I am not responsible for what they do..

HI Mike,

Just confirming that I have the Lexmark drivers for Vista installed on the
Vista Laptop and the Lexmark XP Drivers installed on the Windows XP PC's.

The Vista Laptop prints with no problems when the printer is attached to it
and likewise the Windows XP PC's print fine when the printer is attached to
them. The Windows XP PC's work fine over the network printing to the Lexmark
with no problem.

The problem comes when I try to print to the Lexmark when it is attached to
a Windows XP PC from the Vista Laptop across the network.

The printer drivers work fine on their individual machines so I am not sure
whether the problem is the drivers or Vista.

Allan, you should maybe start over.. leave the Lexmark connected to the XP
machine.. uninstall Vista printer drivers as they will be looking for a
local printer which, if not connected directly, will never be found..

What you need to do now is go to Control Panel, Add Hardware, and add the
printer, taking the option of a network printer when offered.. when it looks
for the driver, point it to whatever you downloaded from the Lexmark
website..

Hi Mike,
Just tried that and the only thing that might be a factor is that the Vista
Printer driver file that I downloaded from the Printer Manufacturer's site is
a zipped file with their printer software as well as drivers. I don't know
which is which and so installed from the setup file. All reportedly went well
and a new icon duly appeared on Printers page and the port had automatically
been selected as \\computer_name\\printer_share_name.

Opened the printer window, selected 'properties' and tried to print a test
page.
'Printing' briefly appeared in the printer window but nothing happened.

I fell as though I am back to where I started a few days ago.

Any ideas?

I'm having a VERY similar problem, if not exactly the same problem. I have a
network with several computer (XP) with a couple of printers shared. No
problem untill I added a new laptop with Vista. At first the Vista machine
saw and printed to the two printers, then all output stopped. Print jobs
appear to route but nothing comes out of the printers. I've had to resort to
sending the document I want to print to one of the XP machines, and print it
from there.

Any news or fixes to your problem will be of great interest to me.

Thanks a bunch. StanCo

Hi StanCo,

Sorry - no progress. The situation is just the same.
Using the Lexmark quite happily on the Windows PC's across the network but
the Vista Laptop will not print to the Lexmark when it is connected to a
Windows XP PC on the same Network.

I was hoping tat open of the Vista patches would solve the problem - but
no.. so I have to transfer files to a Windows XP PC then go to that machine
and print from their - which is annoying and antiquated! I remember having to
do this with floppy disks before we had wireless networks!

Perhaps one day Microsoft and printer manufacturers will get their acts
together and save us poor users these problems!

Eureka! I did it!!! Here's how:

1. found out the actual name of the printer
a. opened 'Network' from Vista desktop
b. dbl-clicked the computer with the printer attached
c. dbl-clicked 'Printers'
d. right-click properties of the target printer
e. click 'sharing' tab
f. noted the actual shared name (hp5550)
2. Clicked 'Start:Settings:printers'
3. dbl-clicked 'Add Printer'
4. click 'Add Local Printer'
5. lick 'Next' accepting the defaults (use existing port:lpt1)
6. find the correct driver by manufacturer and model
7. click 'Next'
8. I clicked 'Next' when asked to 'Use Currently Installed Driver'
9. Click 'Next'
10. Click 'Finish' - don't print a test page
11. Get Properties of the new printer that showed up in your printer list
12. Click the 'Port' tab
13. Click 'Add a Port'
14. Highlight 'Local Port'
15. Click 'New Port...' button
16. Enter port name (here's where you use the name you got earlier, in my
case it is '\\donna\hp5550' )
17. Then make sure the port you just defined is 'Checked' and click 'Apply'
& then 'OK'

Please let me know if this works for you - StanCo
