I need a list of the 500 midi files in WE - how do I get it?

I"ve known how to copy and paste since 1996 and just spend
about 30 minutes on the net last night searching how to C&P from Windows
Explorer. I found no information on this. I
have over 500 midi files and need to send a list of thier names to some
friends. I tried to C&P them to WordPad and I got 500 midi's in WP, and
no way to STOP it once they started to transfer. Esc didn't work, Task
Manager wouldn't work and the STOP button in WE wouldn't work.... I had
to wait then just delete the whole mess. I need a list of the names so
prt scrn wont work either - how is this done from WE? Do I need special
software?

How do I copy the list of the NAMES Of the midi files and not the files
themselves to so I can send the list to my friends?
I would also like a list of my MP3s as well. I have over 2500 of them.

Please give step by step since I'm not a technician. Thank you. :)

I find it easy to use either one of the free Print Folder or Print
Directory utilities. Kelly listed the links below. I PREFER THE LAST LINK
(for step 5 click the Advanced button if the Edit button is grayed out),
which goes to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that tells you how to add
Print Directory to the right click menu in Windows Explorer and My Computer.
Although the article mentions other versions of Windows, it works fine with
Windows XP, and is much faster than doing a Print Screen and Pasting.

Print the names, and other information, of all folders and files on your

You can do it from the command line...

Go to the comand prompt (Start, Run, type in CMD press enter). Change
directory to where the midi files are (example: if they are in
C:\midifiles type in CD\MIDIFILES and press enter). Then you can use the
DIR command and pipe the output to a file, such as DIR > LIST.TXT

Then you'll have a text file of the directory listing.

Here are three ways:

1. Go to a command prompt and issue the command

dir [drive:folder] > prn

If that doesn't work, your printer may not be connected to prn.
In that case issue this command instead:

dir [drive:folder] > c:\tempfilename (you can use any name and
put it in any folder you want)

Then open notepad, open tempfilename, and print it from there.

2. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q321379
and follow the instructions there.

3. Download and use any of the several freeware/shareware
utilities that can do this, such as the popular

Greetings --

From the command prompt (Start > Run > Cmd.exe), simply change to
the desired directory and type "dir > filelist.txt" or "dir > lpt1,"
just as you used to do in DOS. Any of the switches for the DIR
command (type "dir /?") will work with this command, if you wish to
modify the output. You can then subsequently edit the resulting text
file using NotePad, WordPad, Word, etc.

Open a command prompt in the folder where the files are. Type dir /b >
dir.txt. This creates a text file with just the file names and none of the
other information (like size, date, etc). Open the file with notepad or the
like. Remove the "dir.txt" entry and save and close the file.

You now have a list of the names of the files in that folder.
