My emachine would not recognize any keyboard after it booted up. You would
get to the logon screen and couldn't do anything. After about 3 min the pc
would reboot. I lost my restore cd. I did the chat with emachine tech supprt
and they told me:
a) they couldn't give me a replacement
b) I had to buy a retail version of win xp!
My borther gave me his win xp cd but apparently it was an upgrade cd. Now I
am really messed up. Once the computer boots it can't complete the
installation. I deesparately need another restore disk. How can I get one?
What can I do at this point!!???!!??

well, there are several
options and limitations
when it comes to utilizing
the winxp.

first of all, if you emachine
was updated to sp3 then
your winxp sp2 cannot
install windows.

in trying, you are attempting
to downgrade the emachine
from sp3 to sp2, which is not
possible with an "upgrade"
cd or with a full version if
it is sp2 as well.

perhaps, you might need to
utilize the recovery console
that is provided by the cd and
version friendly.

when you boot with the cd
you will come to a screen
providing the option to install
or repair.

select repair so that the
recovery console will load
and launch.

after you log into your system
run the following commands
at the disk prompt:

into the recovery console
and access the disk prompt>:

chkdsk
fixboot
fixmbr

then exit, remove cd and
retry booting normally.

Well, the eMachines support person is probably right.

But try here: www.restoredisks.com

I've never used it. but they seem to offer restore disks for various
systems, perhaps for yours.

Note that some restore disks don't do "repair" installs, but instead only
destructive recovery, meaning they wipe the drive first. Your data would
then be gone, so be sure that you've backed it up first. This is easy to
do by attaching the drive to another system and simply copying hte data off.
You may, or may not, have to Take Ownership of the folders to gain access.
