That sounds like an O.E.M disk with oem the licence is
non transfarrable... that means that that disk can only be
used with the original machine it came with....
If the disk is a retail copy then u can install it on
the emachine
from what info u have given sounds to me u have an oem
disk and may actually not install on the emachine

Not legally. using the same logic you can get a new copy from the
computer store also free, if they don't catch you. Not being caught does
not make it right.

Unfortunately, even if you wish to break the OEM EULA, the protection
HP/Compaq/Dell and others use are BIOS locked to the computer is was
installed on.

You mean steal?
He may not have realized what he is saying.
However you are encouraging others to steal.
Tells us a lot about your character and who you really are.
Also, if it is HP OEM, it will not be possible unless the illegal
computer installation is also an HP.

Also, I hope you did not use your real Email address, the spambots
surely have what you input.

Greetings --

No, of course not.

OEM versions are _permanently_ bound to the first PC on which they
are installed. An OEM license, once installed, is not legally
transferable to another computer under any circumstances. This is the
main reason some people avoid OEM versions; if the PC dies or is
otherwise disposed of (even stolen), you cannot re-use your OEM
license on a new PC.

Besides, HP OEM CDs are BIOS-locked to prevent theft. They'll
install only upon the PC for which they're designed.

Greetings --

You really are clueless, aren't you? Never heard of a BIOS-locked
Recovery CD? HP OEM CDs won't install on any machines besides the
ones they're designed for.

You can wait 120 days or forever and the hp restore disk will not work on
the emachine.

No. The Windows XP CD that came with your HP computer
will only install on the same HP computer it was shipped with.

work if I use it for an emachine?

Curious am I. If I'm building boxes for someone else, how do I BIOS lock
that instance of the pre-installed Windows? I'd like to enforce the EULA
for OEM versions.

For a BIOS locked version of Windows (i.e., the media for it), what happens
if you update the BIOS to a new version? Will the BIOS locked version
created under the prior version of the BIOS no longer reinstall or repair
under the new BIOS version?

Do you need customized BIOS that looks for a firmware fixed string? If you
have a custom built box from components you put together and just have
whatever is the standard BIOS included on the MSI, Abit, Asus, or whatever
motherboard, can you still BIOS lock the Windows install media?

I did a search at http://support.microsoft.com/ (on all products) and at
http://search.microsoft.com/ on "BIOS lock" and didn't come up with
anything. If I fab a box for someone else and they want the cheaper price
of an OEM version AND they want it preinstalled, I'd like how to lock up the
restore disks. It seems that if I preinstall the OEM version than I must
not give the customer the OEM CD for Windows but must instead give them my
generated restore CDs (that are locked).
