I had to reinstall XP to c:/windows2

Jim

I needed to not overwrite certain things in C:\windows. The computer
would not boot is why I needed a reinstall.

Everything is fine EXCEPT now, on my HP ZD7000 laptop, it says that
there is no audio device installed.
I have tried everything....all the codecs and drivers are functioning
properly according to the Device Manager.

Is there something that I can copy from the original XP installation
to The new one that will correct this problem???

TIA

you could try "updating" the drivers...then pointing the install to your
original \inf folder
but then you'd probably have to chase down what it was looking for in
\system32

You can give that a try or else just get the drivers from the manufacturer
of your laptop.
If you go to their website...they should have a tech support or downloads
tab

If the drivers are showing up in device manager without exclamation points,
etc., you might try getting the latest versions from HP.

I'd strongly suggest that you back up your data and do a clean install so
you don't have multiple Windows directories. Doing a parallel install is
sometimes necessary, but it isn't a good way to leave your computer.

He essentially did a clean install.
The original windows folder can be deleted and the entry removed from
boot.ini

Glad you got it working.

For home/standalone workstations I've become inordinately fond of Acronis
TrueImage - their Home version doesn't cost much at all, and if you do image
backups to an external drive you will never ever have to do this sort of
thing again. It's a huge lifesaver.

Yes, that's true - but he's also now got orphaned junk in the program files
folder, etc. It's
not merely due to the "untidiness" of c:\windows2 that I'd recommend a clean
reinstall.
