i got a new pc at work and not knowing what winmail was (outlook replacement)
deleted everything that pertained to it. now i cant set it up and i need it.
all my other coworkers use outlook so it would make it easier on me if i had
it to. at first i tried to set it up but didnt know how to find the info on
my mail server so i hit anything i could to get out of it. We have a mail
service through a site called Proapp. anyone know how i can fix this or
have i done something irreversible?

Mighty un-neighborly of you co-workers to not let you see how they setup
Outlook to work with your email service and shame on your IT department
folks for not helping either. First of all, does your office use Microsoft
Outlook, or do you use Outlook Express? Windows Mail is an update to
Outlook Express, it is NOT a replacement for Microsoft Outlook; Outlook
Express will not run on Windows Vista, Microsoft Outlook, versions 2003 and
2007, are fully compatible with Vista and run fine. Mail server information
should be available from your IT department. Please let us know the
details.

they all use microsoft office.....i found a download of microsoft works on my
own and that is how i have been able create save and open documents. the
problem is we commonly use a spreadsheet form for one of our tasks and
normally they would email it to me so i could save it and reuse it. but
since i dont have the same software it wont work. i thought maybe if i could
get winmail going i could get the form. this is a small company and we do
not have an it dept. its all kinda fend for yourself here. they had an
installation disk for microsoft office but it got lost. and with promises of
getting a new disk i am left waiting "in the wings" . meanwhile i have to
have my coworker prepare all my spreadsheets for me. mainly because the one
she has already has the fourmula in it that we use. i may have to just
continue to tuff it out til they decided to buy the software. thanks !!

You mentioned 'Outlook' several times, but I think you meant
Outlook Express. Outlook and Outlook Express are two very different
email programs. Outlook Express will not run on a Vista computer.

I doubt you were able to delete anything critical, since Windows Mail
is part of Vista's protected operating system files. If you deleted all
the Start menu shortcuts for Windows Mail, you will need to create a
new one.

First go to Control Panel (Classic view), open Folder Options, then click
the View tab, then click "Show hidden files and folders", then unselect
the next option "Hide extensions for known file types". Click OK, and
close Control Panel.

Click Start, Computer, then navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Mail,
open that folder, then right-click on WinMail.exe, select "Create Shortcut".
You should now have a Windows Mail shortcut on your desktop.

You said you have mail service through ProApp, but there are several
companies whose name starts with ProApp, so you will have to be more
specific. Also, how is this related to your absolutecommunication.net
email address?

the email addy u ask about is the one i have here at work......it is set up
through this site http://www.proapp.net/ ....i dont know much about the
outlook....either of them. but i do believe they use outlook express. so if
i understand u correctly...even if they get me the microsoft install disk i
still cant use it because vista wont support it....or at least the outlook
express part? if this is right then what should i use. they all have their
email throught the same place but have been able to use outlook express to
access it.

i also can not figure out how to reset the host on my winmail......when i
first attempted to set it up i got frustrated and typed in a random host
name.....now it gives me a error message about not being able to locate the
host......heres the message....The host 'etyhartj' could not be found. Please
verify that you have entered the server name correctly.
Account: 'etyhartj', Server: 'etyhartj', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D......how do i
fix that?

MS Works & MS Office are completely different applications
An MS Office (Excel) spreadsheet will not be editable by Works, even if
Works will open it

Microsoft Outlook is often included on the Microsoft Office install disk.
Your mention of the install disk makes me think your colleagues are
running Outlook instead of Outlook Express. One frequent problem with
Outlook is that it tends to send attachments in a proprietary format called
RTF. No other email programs are able to do anything with attachments
that were sent via Outlook's RTF format. The workaround is for your
colleagues to configure their Outlook to send using a more compatible
format, and perhaps our resident Outlook expert, Hal, can tell you how to
do that, but in my experience the problem will return whenever Outlook
gets updated or reinstalled. In an office situation where co-workers need
to exchange documents, it is best if all workers use the same email program.

"etyhartj" is obviously not a correct mail server name.
Can't you ask your co-workers what settings they use, and then
make your Windows Mail settings the same?
The server name can be edited by going to Tools, Accounts, select
that mail account, Properties, Servers.

o ok...i thought they would be compatible. that explains why it would let me
open it but not change it. thanks!

we do all use the same email program. it is through the proapp site i linked
previously. the difference is they are use outlook to access their mail.
they have the same @absolutecommunication.net as i do.

thank you. i found that software already and they didnt want to spend that
kind of money. instead they are trying to by a disk for microsoft office '98
for me. they found it on a software outlet site. they dont seem to worry
themselves with compatibility. i am the one that has to "make things work"

they say they forgot. any other ideas.....lol.

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then the account with the bad server
name, then Properties, then Server or Servers. Click at the end of the
bad server name, backspace over it, then type the correct server name.
Depending on whether you have the bad server name entered twice,
you may have to make this correction twice. Then click on Apply,
then OK, then Close.

You'll probably have to get someone else at work to check their
server names so you'll know the correct names to enter.

ok....i understand that part. but how do i find the server name. noone here
knows how to do it.

If you intend to use the Outlook program included with Office 98, it
probably won't work properly on Vista. For more on this, see
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/vista.htm

I'm not sure if the other Office 98 programs (Word, Excel) will work on Vista.
Before anyone spends money on this, better ask in a Microsoft Office forum.

S

ok.....ill figure it out....and just i can do this at home does anyone know
where i can find this info for hotmail?

S
