We would need a lot more details than what you provided.
A good start is to copy the error message and paste it into
a reply here.

"I am having the same problem emails using microsoft mail with Windows
Vista, and it happened after the automatic updates were installed last night.
I restored my computer to an earlier date and it worked fine, but when the
updates were installed again, the problem returned.

this is the message I get when I try to send email. Incoming messages still
work fine.

"The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.dls.net', Server: 'mail.dls.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

A few minutes later, the mail will be sent out automatically.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Re:
Uncle Garry', Account: 'Personal', Server: 'smtp.windstream.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '553 Authentication is required to send mail as
<[email protected]>', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 553,
Error Number: 0x800CCC78

What you need to do is go to Tools, then Accounts. Select the account you are
having trouble with and select properties. Under servers there should be a
little check box that says "My server recquires Authentication". If you click
this box and apply the settings, the mail will have no problem being sent.
Sorry about the copy of error message earlier, just wanted to show you all
what I had going on.

The fact that the send failure started happening after doing the
Windows Updates is probably a coincidence.

First, please confirm that DLS is your home ISP, and you were
sending from home when the problem occurred.

Next, check to see which antivirus you are using.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
or Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Yes, DLS is my server and I was sending from home. The box was checked in
the accounts section for Authentication and I'm using AVG anti-virus.
It seems to be working fine now Gary and Alex, so it may have been a
slowdown somewhere down the line.
Thanks for your advice.

You're more likely to get help if you show the entire error message.

Also, what if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them
cause various problems with Windows Mail.

Hello,

Im having similar problems: can receive mails, cant send them.
Uninstalled Norton virusscanner, now running AntiVir Personal. I also
downloaded Windows Live Mail, instead of Windows Mail, with no effect.

This is the error message:
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'a', Account:
'mail.jecorporate.com', Server: 'mail.jecorporate.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
24, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Thanks in advance for the help!

Already answered in your other post "cant send email".
Please, only one thread per issue; otherwise all you're doing is diluting
the available responder resources.

You've used your email address for the name of the email server and that
won't work. Who do you get your Internet service from?

Aside from the invalid server name you are using, there are some other
aspects. I see you used a Yahoo email address. Is that your only email
address? US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only,
no POP access. Windows Mail handles POP mail but not webmail.

Yahoo's solution is for you to pay extra for their premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have three other
solutions:
* Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
* Get a free Gmail account.
* Get a free Hotmail/Live account, and use it with the Windows Live Mail email program.

Your email account provider should have the necessary info on their website.
