I cant get rid of spyware on task bar

I have downloaded the new Norton 2006 and I have downloaded XoftSpy a
cleaning program that rids you computer of adware and spyware... however...
the problem still exists. I have a green handicapped symbol in my taskbar
that blinks to a red circle cross out symbol. Also yellow triangular symbols
blink with exclamation mark in the middle. A small red outlined screen pops
up telling me my pc is infected and I should get their software... also ads
pop up at random from everything to Casono ads to dating site ads. NOthing I
have tried gets rid of these annoying pests off my taskbar. What in the
world do I do know??? I thought that the new Norton or the XoftSpy ware would
correct the problem. Please help me if you can... thanks so much

Hope you didn't pay for XoftSpy....
I used a XoftSpy online scanner of my computer and came up with a vast
number of errors. After doing a bit of "google" research I found that XoftSpy
is considered by some users to be malware. The Popups you talk about are part
of the application. I suggest you uninstall XoftSpy. XoftSpy also is used in
conjunction with the vcodec trojan that spybot detects. XoftSpy guarantees to
remove it, but it appears that the two (XoftSpy and vcodec) are distributed
by people wishing to scare those users who don't know any better.
I suggest after XoftSpy removal, you se spybot (or similiar)...

I've experienced exactly the same problem as Vangie81. but with a program
called spyfox. I removed the program but all the aforementioned still occur.
Just to top things off, my homepage won't change back to msn.com no matter
what i try. any help would be greatly appreciated. thankyou.

Further, if you need information as to what is considered legitimate or scam
software, I suggest you take a stroll to http://spywarewarrior.com/
They constantly list "rogue" software - Spyfox is amongst them, I believe.

thank you rosefisted, I tried spybot but it said that I had to buy it before
I could clean my pc with it.... was I doing something wrong? must have been.
When you're a novice at this you can get into so much trouble. thanks so
much for you help. I will try and install spybot again.

G

I'll check that out... Spybot should still be a freebie (one of the best on
the web)... And hey, I'm a novice too. I fell into the same trap and thought
the least I could do was let you know.

The payment you speak about is nothing more than a donation. If you scroll
down you should see the download buttons....
Download spybot search and destroy 1.4
This will take you to a page with a choice of download sites.. Pick any of
them - They're all good. Once installed, read the instruction files, etc,
update the definitions and you're away to having some resemblance of a clean
machine.

G

Yes I was able to download spybot and you're right it was only a donation....
it's running now.... I'll let you know if it does the trick. thanks for the
other sites as well... :blush:)

G

Guest

I did a scan with spybot... it fixed many problems but it did not get the
icons off my taskbar... maybe my pc is damagned... :blush:( will I have to take
it in to a pc doctor? thanks...

Hey, try the adaware personal application as well.
Also, before spending cash, do a quick check on www.google.com.(whatever
country you're in)
Search criteria should be "toolbar" "adware" "removal" plus anything else to
narrow the search. A great many people and sites are out there... They may
have the solution online. Just double check with a couple of sites for the
solution.. It may be right in front of you...
Anyway, I'm off.. It's 4.40am in Australia and I need to fill my head with
zeds...
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz:)

Australia???? I have a friend in NSW.... where are you? and what are zeds?
when you get back from eating them or putting them in your head you can
respond to this...LOL. I'm in Alabama, US. I will try anything before I
take it in, however I pray that in the mean time this THING is not eating my
pc up and will not evenutally kill it... *tears*.
thanks...

XoftSpy was listed as a Rogue anti spayware application on Spyware Warrior.
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Spyware Warrior has revoked that status but based upon the posts I have seen, I think theat
reversal was to hasty and I can NOT suggest the use of XoftSpy and suggest its removal !

If you are using any version of Sun Java that is prior to JRE Version 5.0,
then you are strongly urged to remove any/all versions that are prior to JRE
Version 5.0. There are vulnerabilities in them and they are actively being exploited.
It is possible that is how you got infected with malware.

Therefore, it is highly suggested that if there are any prior versions of Sun Java
to Version 5 on the PC that they be removed and Sun Java JRE Version 5.0 Update 6
be installed ASAP.

Simple check, look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version...

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

* SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Hi,
I'm in the New South Wales town of Wagga Wagga.
Further to the toolbar situation, try uninstalling it... Go to setting, then
add/remove programs.
I take it you're using yahoo toolbar?
If so, I believe you can uninstall it there.
Also, once any initial checks are done, restart your computer in safe mode...
Restart your computer. While the computer restarts, look for the
instruction to press an "Function key (They're the ones at the very top of
your keyboard... F1, F2, F3, etc)." The option should then present itself to
start in safe mode.
Safe mode looks unusual. The graphics are low res, and the text looks all
wrong. This is normal operating of Windows. Safemode simply means that no
applications will run unless you want them to. Thus, using spybot etc will
pick up threats, etc that may be disguised by normal running of your computer.
Cheers, Chris
