You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
(download it without the accompanying rubbish)

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

Is there something else that could be wrong with it besides a Virus/Spyware
problem?.. Since I have no reason to think that I have a virus, sicne the
rest of my Operating System (XP) is working fine.

My System Information is:

Dell 2400
Windows Xp Version 2002
256 RAM
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics Card
Internet Explorer version 6 [IE SP 2]
180 GB Hard Drive

OS is working fine, excpet for the IE 6. Firefox is working fine also.

Since FireFox appears to work OK, it's unlikely to be the Winsock problem
AFAIK- but try Frank's fix anyhow, it can't do any harm.

Other possibilities include a borked patch - try downloading and
installing/running Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) - see if it reports any
failures

And if that doesn't help...

Checking for/Help with Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

Assuming that you have SP2, go to Start | Run and type
CMD
In the command window type
netsh winsock reset

Did you ever get your problem resolved? If so, can you tell me how? I'm
having the same problem. See the thread under the 12/12/2005 "My Internet
Explorer is gone" posting for more info.

Thanks

I had this problem and it was because I installed this software "Fresh
Download" I used it and didn’t like it after I removed it my IE stopped
working. I had to go to C:\Program Files\FreshDevices and delete the whole
folder.
