I CAN'T BOOT MY COMP

W

wes

Anybody who thinks they know computers, here is a test.
If anyone can answer this then, well your awesome at
computers. Basically my computer will not boot. It gets
to a blue screen which says the follow and then tries to
restart.

***STOP: 0x00000001E
(0xC0000005,0x805064B5,0x00000000,0x00000000)
KMODE_EXECPTION_NOT_HANDLED

***Address 805064B5 base at 80400000, DateStamp 384d9b17 -
ntoskrnl.exe

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system
administrator or technical support group.

This restarting process happens infinitely, in other
words I can't get into windows 2000.

Also the cd-rom doesn't work anymore. So I can't use the
cd to get the file. I should also note I have a laptop so
replacing the cd-rom is out of the question because
Compaq sux.

I tried downloading a boot disk for win2000 and it almost
worked but said the ntoskrnl.exe file was corrupt and
that I needed to install it again.

How do I do this on my laptop if I can't use the cd-rom
(and I can't replace it cause Compaq can bite my ass) how
can I recover that file????

I hear that there are 4 disks or something that can be
used in this situation. I really don't know. Somebody
help me! MY EMAIL is (e-mail address removed)

Try booting in safe mode -- hit F8 at the first Windows 2000
screen (you might have to try several times if you have set your
boot timeout short or only have one entry, even start hitting it near
the end of the "BIOS" display).

Choose "Safe Mode" and undo what ever changes you just
made that screwed it up (new drivers, updates, etc.) -- or
tell us what you did last and we will try to help.

Alterntively use "Last Known Good" from the Safe Mode
screen to try putting the registry back in a known good state.

If neither of these are working, try Safe Mode with command
prompt only and see below....

You know there is a certificate with a purchased CD-ROM that
should let you obtain a replacement if you purchased it legally, right?

Also note that these CDs seldom fail so that is a little suspicious
to us here...see below....

Downloaded from where? Suspicions rising....see below....

Retail versions of Windows come WITH the installation
diskettes I believe -- used to be the case with NT at least,
not 100% sure about Win2000. Is your version OEM or
from an Enterprise licensing program?

Where did you purchase your Win2000? Another copy of
Win2000 Pro is not very expensive these days.

What happens when you try to boot the CD-ROM exactly?

BTW, I have never lost one of these yet.

I think he means that the CD-ROM drive isn't working, rather than the
Windows 2000 CD-ROM.

Wes, I looked on the knowledge-base, but couldn't find anything directly
relating to your question.

Try Herb's suggestion of using last known good or safe mode and see if that
gets you anywhere.

THE CD-ROM DOESN"T WORK ANYMORE FOR A WEIRD REASON AND I
CAN'T REPLACE IT. I WOULD NEED TO SEND TO COMPAQ TO
REPLACE AND REPAIR AND IT WOULD COST MORE THAN A BRAND
NEW COMPUTER. UGGG!!! IS THERE ANY WAY TO DO IT WITHOUT
THE CD_ROM???

If you can get the 4 diskettes made on ANOTHER computer;
(doesn't even have to run Win2000 if it can run the MakeBoot.exe
from the subdirectory \BootDisk on the CD-Rom, e.g., DOS, Win9x)
then you can BOOT from the 4 diskettes and should not even need the
CD-ROM to get to recovery console.

Have you checked your BIOS settings? If a working CD-ROM
"won't" boot (first) and formerly did so, then it is likely a BIOS setting.

Just change it. (You may need your manual -- or see the prompt on
the BIOS/boot screen -- to figure out which key to press for BIOS
setup.)

If the CD-ROM is actually broken you can buy a new one and install
it yourself (or pay someone) -- they are very cheap, in fact you might
upgrade to either DVD reader or CD-burner for a small extra cost.

On a laptop, a new CD drive is not cheap!

True but an entire laptop (around 1 Ghz) can be had for about
$500.

Did you check the BIOS yet?

If it "quit" booting, it is likely a BIOS setting.
