I cannot print in a DOS window on a directly connected printer

I am trying to print to a Deskjet 720C HP Deskjet printer, directly connected
to an HP Pavilion, running XP SP2. The printer works fine with any Windows
based program but does not work in DOS, either using "EDIT" or doing
something like "dir > lpt1". The printer is connected to the lpt port and is
listed as using lpt1 in the printer properties.

Did you install the drivers for DOS? Since there is no native DOS in
Windows XP (and I assume you are running XP since you posted in an XP
newsgroup), what DOS programs are you running?

This is assuming you have more than one printer.

Also try - Copy.........prn and print.......

To print the DOS directory listing it is Dir > PRN

PRN and LPT1 are identical. If one works the other will too. I'm not sure
what his problem is, but this isn't it.

I've seen this with several DOS programs, and with all Windows only
printers (which rasterize in the computer for everything). For a
friend who has a classic DOS application, I found a program DOSPRN
which I see on http://www.dosprn.com/ is currently dosprn178.exe. It
works but has a few quirks.

It is shareware and uninstalled fine after I tested it for my friend.
