Hyphens / Dashes in Word

Sometimes when I press the 'hyphen/dash' key (between 0 and = on the
keyboard) I get a short line. Sometimes I get a longer one. Can I control
what I will get and how?

All tips will be welcomed.

This newsgroup is available to help folks learning to use Microsoft Access,
the relational database. Try reposting in a Word-related newsgroup...

(I've found that a dash surrounded by spaces and words turns into the 'long'
version.)
