Hyperlinks to other presentation - changing slides position

S

Susanne E.

Hi

My presentation has many hyperlinks to particular slides
in another presentation. The problem is that I frequently
have to move slides around or insert new ones in my target
presentation. Whenever I do this, as a consequence my
hyperlinks will be wrong. Is there a way to define
hyperlinks to specific slides, independent of their
position in the presentation?

I am trying to insert new slides at the end, but the
presentation is very comlex and mistakes happen - I'd
rather not risk to mess up 50 hyperlinks each time.

I use PPT 2003.
Thanks for your ideas and comments.

Is there a reason for the cross linking? With PowerPoint 2003 you could merge
the two presentations and let PowerPoint update the links.

Hi Sonia,

Thanks for the answer.

1) Yes, there is a reason. 80 slides in Presentation A and
150 in presentation B. We thought it was inevitable to
split the presentation to keep the size manageable.

2) Let Powerpoint update the links - how?

If all of the slides are in a single presentation with links from slide to slide
and you insert slides or re-order them, PowerPoint adjusts the links to keep the
pointers correct. It can do this because it has all 230 slides open and
available in a single file.

Hi Sonia,

Oh great, I did not know that.
Still my presentation is too big and complex to keep all
slides in one file.

You say Powerpoint can not keep hyperlink pointers correct
if they point to another file?

Well, PowerPoint treats each file as a single entity. If you change something
in one presentation, it doesn't have the capability of searching all of your
hard drives for other presentations that might be impacted because they link to
the one you've just changed. That's your job. On the other hand, it *does*
adjust things within the same presentation, so if you have a link to slide 3 but
then you insert a new slide in front of it, PowerPoint will adjust the link to
point to slide 4 because slide 3 has just become slide 4.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the Critical
Update or Service Pack 1 for Office 2003 as soon as possible. From
PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for Updates".]

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PowerPoint
that you just created (you can save, but not open)? -

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the linking functionality that you are looking
for.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint should provide this kind of functionality natively (not
requiring add-ins or ActiveX controls), don't forget to send your feedback
(in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft by either:

PREFERRED METHOD:

A) If you are using Microsoft's web-based, online newsreader for Office
communities
(http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.p
ublic.powerpoint), check to see whether or not the suggestion has been
submitted before (Show -> Suggestions for Microsoft) and, if so, add your
vote to the suggestion submission. If the suggestion has not been submitted
before, click on the "New" drop-down menu and choose "Suggestion for
Microsoft" from directly within the newsreader web page.

OR, NEXT BEST METHOD:

B) If you are using another newsreader (such as Microsoft Outlook Express),
submit your suggestion using your web browser at the following address:
http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).
