HTML or HTM

I just upgraded from FP98 to FP2003. I am now confused about whether I
should make the home pages of my sites .htm or .html.

Is there a requirement?

You web host will determine what file extension is required for your home page, and if publish via
FP's http mode, then the server extensions on the live/remote server will rename the home page to
what is required by the web host.

....and the *other* pages in your web can be either htm or html doesnt
matter.

Hi TA...I jumped from my post up to this one. I understand how and what to
do now but this is definitely a confusing issue to those of us who are
novices. In my opinion, it would have been better when you first open a new
web in FP, for FP to name it index.html rather than index.htm because the
many of us have to change it anyway.

Use FP to Publish and it will handle the renaming for you if
necessary.

FP won't name anything until you save a file for the first time (remember
when you go FIle > new > Page, FP makes a new page with a default name like
"new_page_1.htm", and if you close the page, it will prompt you to save it,
giving you the full control over what you name it as, or when you go File >
Save - name it to whatever you want, including the filename extension

So it shouldn't be a great effort to do.

The default document is determined by the web server and the server
administrator. It is the document that will be served if it exists when
a call is made to a folder or subfolder without specifying a file. There
can be more than one default document specified. The admin will specify
the order to look for them. If the first one is there, it will be
served. If it's not there, it will look for the next one and so on. If
none are there, the directory listing will be provided if directory
listing is enabled. If dir. listing is not enabled, you will get an
error page.

Default document are usually:
index.htm for Unix/Linux and non-windows servers
default.htm for Windows servers.

Other possibilities are:
index.html
index.asp
default.asp
and the various cobinations of extensions for script languages/technologies.
