HP LJ 1012 --- how to clean up the boot?

I had a nice, clean boot -- cleaned out or suppressed all the scum programs
that insisted on loading on startup just in case they might be used. Then I
installed my HP Laserjet 1012, and there's an added 30 sec each time I boot.

I looked in the HP folder under the start menu, and had a nice warm fuzzy
feeling, those nice HP guys gave me an option to cut out at least some of
this -- but it doesn't work.

Under start menu, run "hp Device Status and Alerts"
A box pops up that asks
"Would you like to start hp Device Status and Alerts automatically the next
time Windows is restarted?"
and allows me to change a selection from
"Yes, start again after reboot" to
"No, don't start automatically"
which I do (and then click on OK).

Alas, this has no effect on startup, and every time the selection (it's a
little dot not a checkmark) has changed back to "Yes, start again after
reboot".

Can anyone tell me how to make this go away?
without using selective startup under msconfig?

Sounds like you are using WinXP or 2000. I have installed maybe 40 1010 series
printers with very few problems. So I suggest that you uninstall the driver and
any other printer drivers that may be on your PC that you no longer need,
multiple drivers can cause problems. Then re-install the 1012 driver, but
disconnect the cable until until the installer askes you to connect it.
I did have some serious problems with a 1015 (Parallel interface) on Win 98, we
found that selecting to not install the tool kit solved those issues (This may
have been a red herring, could have been a corrupt windows installation or
something like that, but worth remembering).

Whups, I meant to mention -- using Win Me on this machine.
Thanks for the advice. I do have my old inkjet driver still installed.
I'll try uninstalling all printer drivers, then reinstall the 1012 driver.
I did, by the way, wait to connect the printer until the somewhat confusing
prompt. I may also remove and not reinstall the toolkit; it's not clear
what it does anyway, and it just croaks whenever I try to invoke it.

I had forgotten the prompt is a fraction less than clear <g>. I've done it so
many times that it is almost routine now.
We found that deselecting the toolkit on win98 made the install smoother. If
that does not work you could check to see if there is a .inf file on the CD, if
so you can try to install using "have disc" from the control panel. There is
always HP's help line of course. Good luck.

Thanks again. It's not so much that the prompt is unclear (though I don't
recall), it's that the printed directions included with the printer very
emphatically say that you have to install the drivers and software before
even thinking about attaching the physical printer. And then the software
demands an attached printer to install :).

[FWIW, the online instructions correct this conundrum, but don't actually
point out that they are updated from what's included with the machine. God
forbid they'd admit to a mistake.]
