hp dvd840 has stopped recognising dvds

I have recently reintalled xp on a new hard drive. Since then the HP dvd840b
dvd drive wont recognise any dvd media. The drive has the latest firmware.
The device manager has the driver installed as CDRom drive version 5.1.2535.0.

Update doesnt find a newer version. If I uninstall the driver the same
driver is reinstalled. There are no drivers on the hp website.

In device manager in the properties for the drive, see what drivers you have
installed, should be 4 signed MS drivers, see any others..? Just click the
details button to see them.. Version 5.1.2335.0 is what I have and all is
well..
Do you have the system software or burning app that came with the drive, or
computer installed..? there seems to be a possible update for it on the HP
site, see link above.. Xp can't burn to DVD media without third party
software.. Do you have an HP computer (make & model) ..?
Cheers

Did you also reinstall your third party DVD burning software and your DVD
decoding software?

If it won't recognize any DVDs, unfortunately it sounds like the DVD laser
has gone. The CD side uses a different laser. A standard cleaning kit may
clean it up if it's only dirty, but if you've used it a fair amount,
probably better to replace the whole optical drive.
