DVDs not being read by DVD Drive

My DVD Drive has suddenly stopped recognising DVDs. CD's play fine but when I
insert a DVD it spends some time reading the disc, then tells me that I need
to insert a disc when I try opening the DVD file manually.
Any suggestions?

I'm having a related problem. I have a TEAC DW-224E-A combo CD/DVD
drive. I have a bunch of DVD-R's that I made iTunes backups with on
another computer, but for some reason my notebook that has this drive
will not recognize them at all. I've tried them on 2 other computers
(that have different model drives) and they work fine, but in this one
they just spin for a little bit and do nothing. CD's and commercial
DVD's play fine in it, as have these very same DVD-R's in the past.
I've uninstalled and re-installed the driver, and according to the
device manager it is working properly. Also these backups are on three
different brands of DVD-R's, so the brand isn't the problem. They are
8X, which is what this drive is capable of reading. For the life of me
I can't figure out what the deal is.

I have read something about doing a firmware flash, but I'm not
familiar with that procedure, and from what I've read if you don't know
what you're doing you can really mess things up. Plus every article
I've read about it mainly deals with changing the region of the DVD
drive, which I wouldn't think would be my problem here. Anyways, if
anybody has any advice I would appreciate it
