HP DVD Writer not wring at advertized speed

Hi,

I recently bought a new HP Pavilion a1220n Pentium 4 Computer with a HP DVD
Writer 740b Lightscribe drive. It advertizes that it is an 8x writer. I
have 4X dvd blanks and it will only write at 1.3x speed. Even the CD writer
only writes at about 9X speed. I use Sony 1-8X dvd blanks and TDK 4x dvd
blanks. I use Phillips CD blanks. Is there something that I can do.

Thanks

Check the secondary IDE channel/Advanced settings tab in the IDE
ATA/ATAPI controllers, the setting for the Transfer Mode is DMA if
Available, Current Transfer Mode is Ultra DMA Mode 2.

If that is a problem, then you should check the BIOS settings (F1 at
start) that the drive is recognized as it should be there.

Hi Q,

the setting for the Transfer Mode was correct (DMA if available) but the
Current Transfer Mode is Not Applicable not Ultra DMA Mode 2

Well, that's the problem. You need to check the drive in BIOS setup and
verify that any DMA settings are correct there and the drive is
identified and typed (Auto is the usual). Check also any IDE bus
settings. Unlesss the drive is using direct memory access, it will
never perform adequately. You will also have to open the case and check
the drive cabling and jumpers.

Since this is a new computer, you might want to start with a support
call to HP.

Look for the latest firmware for that particular model. I had Hitachi
CD burner that would only write at 48X (no other speeds listed) until I
upgraded the drive's firmware.
