HP Deskjet612C will not share para port with CanoScanFB330P

Under WinXP I have on parallel port connected via A/B box a flatbed CanoScan
FB330P going to HP DJ612C (default printer). After re-boot I can use the
scanner to copy or scan only once. After that the port is taken over by the
HP printer exclusively. I had removed and re-installed the printer drivers
from the XP built-in source as well as from the CD supplied with the printer.
I did the same thing with the drivers for the CanoScan FB330P removing and
re-installing the driver. When that did not help I looked for possible help
in HP and Canon support and discussion pages on the Internet where I learned
that this is not a unique problem and that it is likely caused by the windows
printing system which gives exclusive port control to the printer driver.
This problem appears to be inherent to late windows structure designed for
networking (like Win2000 or WinXP) and configurations with A/B switch boxes
on the parallel cable. The solution is likely in substituting or augmenting
the printer driver with a Raster version of the HP printer driver. This
suggestion comes from Canon on-line service (beside other sources). I have
asked HP support to help and where I can download suitable Raster driver for
the HP printer and how to install it (if that is the solution) without result
so far. My H/W configuration is: WinXP PC---> A/B switch--->CanoScan
FB330P--->HP DeskJet 612C printer. The error message triggered after an
attempt to use COPY or SCAN option on the Canon is: "The parallel port may be
used by another application. ERROR CODE:: 0x000600800. Can anybody help?
Thank you.

I would strongly recommend that you consider a hardware-based solution.
Install a PCI parallel port card. Connect the printer to that. Connect the
scanner to the original port. Such cards are not expensive and are easily
installed. That way, each device has exclusive use of the port to which it
is connected.

Just one random example of such a card:
