HP deskjet 940c won't print

I've put this question already, but can't find the answer. My printer has
stopped working. It simply doesn't respond to the print command. The print
status box says that it's printing but nothing is happening, and then the
message changes to 'error'. The printer is shown as installed and the spooler
has been started.

Can anyone help?

Not even a test page?

Have you considered it might have actually died? It's a very ancient
printer, probably time to replace it with a nice new USB 2.0 compatible one.

Can you print a test page from the printer itself?

1. Turn the printer off and remove the cable that connects the printer
to the computer.
2. Turn the printer back on.
3. Press and hold the RESUME button for approximately five seconds.
4. A sample page should print.

OR

1. Turn the printer off and remove the cable that connects the printer
to the computer.
2. Turn the printer back on.
3. Press and hold the POWER button. Press the RESUME button four times,
then release the POWER button.
4. The self-test page will print with a report containing the printer
model name and serial number.

If those tests worked, can you print a test page, either from the
Printer Properties dialog or from the hp Toolbox "Printer Services" tab
(assuming that you installed the hp Toolbox software)?

Thanks Cari. It is indeed an old printer. So old I have to get up at 6am, put
coal in it, light it and wait until the boiler is at the right pressure. Then
I pull a great big lever to start it.

Seriously, I've got it going now. I uninstalled and reinstalled the
software. I know it's old but it works fine (most of the time). I won't get a
new one just for the sake of it. Think of all that unnecessary energy in
manufacturing creating even more greenhouse gases.

Thanks, Lem. I'll try that next time. If it works it'll be quicker than what
I did, which was to uninstall and reinstall the software.
