HP DeskJet 895Cxi printer installation

We have an HP DeskJet 895Cxi printer installed on our
Windows 2000 server which is accessed via a JetDirect
print server. Any computer on our network running 2000 has
no difficulty connecting to this device however our NT
computers are very difficult to connect. At the server
level you are supposed to be able to configure the device
with more that one driver to address different workstation
operating systems but the system will not permit it. I
have attempted installing every variation of driver
available from HP but in every case the installation
process rejects the drivers as incompatable. I have also
attempted to run the installation software that came with
the printer at the workstation but since the software is
not very smart it only allows for local installation with
access to LPT1, LPT2, and LPT3 with no opportunity to
point to the printer on the network.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem in trying to get a NT4 printer share (HP 6mp) to
recognize a 2k Pro machine. The *only* way I got it to recognize the
existence of the printer was by dragging the icon from Find/Computers to the
Printers folder - typing either the UNC path or the IP address wouldn't
work.

I've even tried setting it up as a LPR connection (like my network lasers)
and as a local port. The NT box will not authenticate the 2k driver, even
though it's the latest one off the HP website. The best suggestion the HP
tech had was to upgrade the NT box to 2k pro... However, that won't fly for
political reasons.

How about directly mapping the NT boxes to the IP of the Jet Direct? Yes,
you lose the control of the print server, but the users can at least use the
printer. Just add the LPR service, and when you designate the ports, you
create a port for IP x.x.x.x with a sharename of PASS (note the caps). Then
set up the NT driver to use that port, instead of LPT1.

Kara
