How Upgrade IE 5.00 to IE6 SP1 (full downloads needed)!

O

Ohaya

Hi,

We installed Windows 2000 Server SP4 on a machine (a Dell server), and
it ends up with IE 5.00 (i.e., the Dell install CDs are Windows 2000
SP4). We need to get IE updated/upgraded to IE6.0 SP1.

Unfortunately, this machine does not yet have network connectivity, so
we'll need to get whatever we need burned on some CDs, and then do the
installations from CD. We can burn the CDs and take them in, but I
can't determine which files I'll need, or where to get them off of the
MS website.

Can someone tell me what I need to do, and where to get the .EXEs for
this?

Thanks in advance!!

Get the CD from Microsoft

or download it from one of these sites

Eric and Frank,

Unfortunately (again), we have to do this tomorrow, so ordering a CD is
not an option. Also, we get essentially "one shot" at doing this (long
explanation), so I am really trying to make sure that we have everything
that we need to do this.

Re. your responses: I want to make sure: Will the IE6 SP1 download
upgrade the *IE 5.00* to IE6 SP1?

I don't need any intermediate upgrades, e.g., IE 5.00 to IE 5.5, etc.?

Thanks again!!

Yes, it will upgrade the previous version, with no intermediates required. BTW, the previous version should be 5.01 SP2.

You may need to install a JAVA engine or update. If so, I'd still stay with Microsoft's. You can get the latest versions here:

http://n6hb.org/s-a/JAVA-ts.htm#ie_jvm

It also contains a link to download Sun version.

No. As long as uou can get online to download that's all you need.
Thanks again!!

And once you have IE6-SP1 installed, you must revisit Windows Update for
additional patches not included in this download.

WinXP machines should install WinXP-SP1, not IE6-SP1, and revisit Windows
Update afterwards, too.

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before going to Windows Update and
when downloading/installing from any MS page.

Supplemental follow-up:

Regarding JVM: After installing IE 6 SP1, open a command prompt window and enter "jview", w/o the quotes. The top line will show the current version level of the installed MS JVM. If it's not 3810, install the update for this version...it's the latest and last one from MS.

Eric, Frank, and PA:

Thanks! I downloaded the setup, and we'll give it a try tomorrow!

Eric,

As a test, I just installed Win2K Advanced Server, and it installed IE
5.00 SP3. The CD was for Win2K AS SP3, so I'm upgrading it to SP4, then
I'll try to install the IE setup files that I downloaded, and see if it
brings IE up to IE 6 SP1.

Don't confuse an SP for Internet Explorer with an SP for Win2k, and note
that installing any Win2K SPs after installing IE6-SP1 will disable IE6-SP1
to be uninstalled. You will have to first remove the post-IE6-install SPs
before being able to uninstall IE6.

I would urge most users to upgrade to IE6-SP1 via Windows Update. To deploy
IE6-SP1 on several machines, the IEAK version is highly recommended:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/downloads/ieak6/ieak6sp1.asp.

And again, note that any install of IE6-SP1 does not include all related
critical and optional patches/updates currently available at Windows Update,
and that WinXP machines will need WinXP-SP1(a) installed, not IE6-SP1.

What should I do before upgrading IE?

You are, in effect, upgrading the OS, not just IE.

PA,

I think that I understand the difference between the IE6 SP1 update and
the Win2K SP4 update :).

The reason that I mentioned that I'm doing the Win2K SP4 update BEFORE
the IE6 SP1 update is that the system that I'm going to be working on
tomorrow is already Win2K SP4, with IE 5.00, so in testing the IE6Setup
files that I downloaded, I wanted to make my test setup tonight as close
as possible to what will be on the other (real) machine tomorrow.

That (the real) machine had Win2K SP4 on it, with IE 5.00, when
installed from the Dell CDs.

Since with my test environment, when I install from the Win2K CD, it
came up with Win2K SP3 and IE 5.00, I thought should bring Win2K to SP4
(since that is what is on the real system) before I run the IE6 SP1
update from the downloaded files....

Hi,

Just got done updating to Win2K SP4, then running the IE6 SP1 install
from the downloaded files (with my network cable unplugged!), and after
that, IE now shows version 6.0.2800.1106;sp1!!

And yes, we have the patches for IE subsequent to IE6 SP1, and we'll run
them after the IE6 SP1 update on the real machine!

Thanks!!!

Hi PA,

FYI, we went ahead with the update yesterday on the real machine(s), and
in case anyone ever gets stuck with doing this, everything looks like it
worked out fine.

Thanks for ALL of the great help!!!!
