How turn off internal formatting symbols within reply emails?

For some unexplained reason, internal formatting symbols - like paragraphs,
indents, spaceing between words and lines - are showing up when I go to reply
or forward an email. I'm using Windows XP, Outlook 2002-SP3. I've never
encountered this before. My antivirus is current. Any ideas on how to
eliminate these annoying things?

Click the Pilcrow mark (¶) in the Word toolbar to turn them off.
