How to switch back and forth first 3 digits in my IP address faster or with less clicks and typing?

D

Dmitriy Kopnichev

Yes. I can ping the second IP address (which is not on the general tab) from
another computer with IP address with the same first 3 digits. The other IP
address with different first 3 digits which is on the general tab cannot be
pinged from the other computer. Now "Windows
An error occurred while reconnecting I: to \\Winserv1\\Infos
Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.
This connection has not been restored." appears and there's no connection to
news servers and external mail servers. \\Winserv1\\Infos is accessed only
when only the second IP address is used , and there's a connection to news
servers and external mail servers only when only the first IP address is
used.
See if you can ping both addresses from another computer on the network.

I was given an IP address with different from other computers first 3 digits
to get access to news servers and external mail servers. Then I was added to
a domain. To get access to the domain resources I have to use my second IP
address with the same as in other computers first 3 digits.
For two IP addresses to matter something has been configured. You need to
tell me what. It could be many things.

an error message that there's an IP address conflict with an other computer
on our network appears after adding the second address. But the second
address works fine when it's entered on the general tab.

What exactly should I tell you?

Dmitriy,

good question. I don't know. The problem is how to tell the
different programs that they should use this IP address or that.
I don't know how to do that or whether it's possible at all.

I would first go to the people who set this up and ask them
whether they're crazy. :) I guess you're only trying to
circumvent a problem that has been created by people in your
vicinity.

The routing table comes to mind. What if your computer routes
between the two IP addresses? But I don't know enough to tell
whether that could be a solution.

I went to people who set this up. They said to add the second IP address in
"Advanced TCP/IP settings". I added and advantages of the both addresses
disappeared.

Our network administrator said that adding the second IP address in
"Advanced TCP/IP settings" would enable both addresses. But after adding
advantages of the both addresses disappeared.

I don't kow if this will help or not, but it sounds like the 2 addresses
you have are in different Class 'A' subnets (first octet (first 3 digits)
are different). Make sure you set the subnet mask for each as 255.0.0.0
(to specify Class "A").
You will probably also have to add specific routing instructions for this
to work properly the way you want. You have to tell your computer which
address to use to specific requests. I'm sorry, I can't give you more
specific help woth routing, it is VERY complicated at times, but I'd bet
it's part of the problem.

Hope this helps, and, as always, your mileage may vary,

Try this to see if it works:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]
"IPEnableRouter"=dword:00000001

Durand,

perhaps worth a test, but in theory this enables routing data
that comes in from one side to the other side outbound. That's
not what he wants.

I still guess that, if it's possible at all, it requires an
alteration of the routing table. But I'm also no expert at that.

Thanks!
I made the domain IP address the first and I got access to domain servers!
Our domain administrator insisted that the domain IP address should be the
second.
Plus you can have multiple IP addresses on a card anyway. Domain services
will need to be the first IP address as not all of windows can use two IP
addresses and will use the first one.

Someone was using the program last week that you'll find by searching
google. Of course my first response is Why? I did get an answer but can't
remember it.
Type in Google
change MAC address
