How to start in safe mode? No, FOR REAL.

Ha ha, good joke, man: "press F8 on start up". Funny.

How do I start in safe mode for real though?

---------
Bigger related problem.

I downloaded an mp3 through p2p. <["unknown artist -- at dawn they sleep
(live)" ca9MB]>

I clicked it and my player said 'corrupted data' (or somesuch). Now that
file won't delete from my hard drive, giving me a message --"this

file in use by another prog" (or something). This mp3 won't left me move it
or rename it. (Even if I just pass over this mp3, it creates an

hour glass delay for 3secs --odd no?)

I believe it is some kind of virus /worm /trojan type thing. (All hacker
types should be in death camps -- and I do mean that.)

AVG free anti-virus doesn't see anything wrong when I scan. (Exactly what
good are firewalls, spybot zapper types and AVs [all of which I

have] if most of the internet problems they don't tackle? For example when I
go to my banking site etc I check my sygate log and see many

call outs to 'atdmt' et al. Death. Camps.)

I figured the offending mp3 might be delete-able if I started in safe mode.
But the winXP help info about how to start in safe mode is

absolute garbage. (...death camps looming!) Hence my question.

Any help? (Or would you like to go silently to your death camp, without
offering a defence?)

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

To get into safemode you really do have to press F8 when booting up.
You have to press it at a specific time though so don't just press it
once. If you keep pressing F8 after you press the power button you
can't go wrong.

Yes. Really. Just keep tapping the F8 key as soon as you start to bootup.

haha no really this is how you do it

Thanks all for the help.

I did a googel immediately after posting here and got a way to safe mode:

msconfig/boot in safemode/restart

My set up (alienware, recent, their default setup) doesn't like the f8
method --I kept trying it and trying it.

As for that disobedient mp3 file....

Safemode didn't work. But deleting the entire folder the file was in did. I
had to cut 13 gigs of stuff out of that folder --leaving the bad mp3 there--
so I could delete it.

Regarding David's help...

That's alot of work to report back on now. But I will be doing some of it
(and saving the rest). Thanks much. I hope some of that stuff is a path that
leads to more success (for all) given the tenacity of maleware and the
ineffectiveness of solutions up till now; Even the respected solutions don't
work.
