How to share files and folders in XP Pro

Hi

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I have 4 machines (all XPPro SP2 with NTFS) on a P2P network via a 3COM
adsl router which handles DHCP. Each machine has Norton Firewall installed.

The network is running fine but I'm struggling with sharing. I currently
have:-

Tom on PC1
Dick on PC2
Harry on PC3
Bert on PC4

Tom's machine has a number of files and folders that I want to share
exclusively with other users, e.g. I want to share as follows:

Dick to have full access to Folder1, Folder2 and Folder3 on PC1 (Tom)
Harry to have full access to Folder1 on PC1 (Tom)
Bert to have read only access to Folder2 on PC1 (Tom)

I have disabled 'Simple File Sharing' and currently as I understand it I
have to set up each machine with the same set of Users, so that I can share
folders/files to specific users on the network. However, this doesn't seem
to work properly, my first share worked as expected but subsequent shares
resulted in 'Access Denied'

Can I set the system up so that only Dick when logged on to PC2 can access
a shared folder on Tom's PC1?

Is there a web site somewhere that can give me some simple instructions?

My initial search on Google found some sites, but the instructions assumed
a thorough knowledge of file sharing and networks.

TIA

It is not sufficient to create a full set of accounts on Tom's PC. You
must also make sure that the passwords are the same.

The next step consists of setting appropriate NTFS permissions
for each folder on Tom (assuming that your disk uses the NTFS
file system). Click Start / Help, type NTFS permissions ,
then follow the instructions.
