and it's causing windowsupdate to keep failing and sending error reports etc.
The help says to use run chkdsk - that doesn't clear it. I've also tried
scannow - also made no difference.
Does anyone have a solution?

Also getting WUAUCLT.EXE.MDMP msg too.

Close WUAUCLT.EXE, it's using the log.

Checked task mgr and it isn't running. Think that only runs intermittently
and fails cos it can't use the update log file. The windowsupdate.log file is
staying as if in use even after having switched pc off completely, re-started
etc. It seems irretrievably locked!!!
Does anyone reckon re-installing XP would solve - and can I do this when CDs
with XP are pre-SP1 and SP2 but I have since downloaded those SPs - don't
want to get it in a worse mess.... :)

You also have to Disable and Stop the Automatic Upadates service in
Services.

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK

That will unlock C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

I empty my WindowsUpdate.log out after the monthly updates.

It seems to have now stopped Norton updates though rest of Norton still works
ok. When try to get it to wrok it comes up with Norton 4002,517 - think this
may indicate a hard disk problem it says when I look it up.
Have tried to defrag (not sure if this would do any good) but as after a
while the pc now seems to lose the operating system completely, it hasn't run
to completion.
If I leave the pc on a while at the moment get a black screen with msg that
the operating system has gone.
Thinking about re-installing XP op system but I have downloaded up to as far
as SP2 and my cds only have the base version - does anyone know if it's ok to
re-install from the cds and would it be ok given have since downloaded the
later SPs?

hi,
Since the CD's are of a lower version we will not be able to get the repair
done.

Try slipstreaming the operating system and try making it
as a SP2 install Source.

Try Slipstream windows XP in Google that helps.
