How to record telephone conversations on a PC?

O

OM

I want to record telephone conversations I have on my PC.

Is there a generic software that will record all sounds going in and
out of my PC?

(In case someone says anything: I want to record telephone
conversations because I'm upset at having been sold something and
promised something else! I've fallen victim of this a few times.)
(And just incase someone else says something: no, I'm not gullable!
You don't really expect to be ripped off when talking to big reputable
companies - which I have.)

Thanks.

This requires a combination of hardware and software. And depending on
jurisdiction, there may very well also be serious legal issues if you fail
to notify both parties of the recording. Check the laws in your area
before proceeding.

You can buy handheld voice recorders with adapters that plug between the
handset and base of a phone, and record the conversation. You can buy
adapters that go between handset and base and plug into the soundcard, and
you can record from that onto recording software of your choice. You can
possibly find a modem that offers similar features. But no matter what,
you have to have the signal from the phone presented to the PC somehow.

Not all of the adapters are good quality, and many can be subject to line
noise that is not perceptible to you (i.e a hum in ther recording that you
did not hear while listening to the call). The jack your phone plugs into
may also have to be considered.

Audacity has a what-u-hear feature that can do that. You can find it here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

It's not a telephone app though, so unless you use one on your computer or
somehow get the audio into your computer, it's not going to work for you.

Me, I just use a good speakerphone and a handheld recorder near it; works
fine.
