How to prevent software from being installed from websites

Some websites prompts users to download and install their software. Once some
buttons like OK is clicked, it is installed. I wonder if there is any
settings or third part software which can prevent these software from being
installed? I think it is very hard just by adding a list of web addresses
into the block list as we never know how many such kinds of websites are out
there.

For XP Pro computers you can use Software Restriction Policies to manage
what a user can install and run on their computer. If you use disallowed as
the default security level then users will only be able to run software that
is in the program files and system folders where a regular user can not
write two with the exception of the \temp folder where they can not execute
from. SRP take a while to tweak but once done they work great. When having
problems check the application log and most likely an SRP event will be
recorded and the path to the file that was blocked. Other options would be
to configure Web Content Zones such as the internet zone to not allow users
to download though this would be effective only if they could not run an
alternate web browser or otherwise download from the internet. There are
also sophisticated gateway firewalls like ISA 2004 that does http
application filtering that can be of great help by looking for certain file
extensions or characteristics. --- Steve
