How to permanantly close design mode in Word?

I created a document that has check boxes in it. However after I save it and
try to reopen it, it opens in design mode and the check boxes can't be used
until design mode is closed. When I save the document, Design mode is closed
so I'm unsure why it keeps opening each time I access the file.

Don't use Design Mode checkboxes unless you are programming. Use checkboxes
from the Forms toolbar or macrobuttons. There are a number of ways to create
and use clickable checkboxes in documents / templates. Some require
protected or locked forms, others do not. Take a look at the Checkbox
template available at
http://www.addbalance.com/word/download.htm#CheckboxAddIn for an exploration
of these.
