how to perform a clean Operating System installation?

Hello,

I have a Compaq Presario V2030US with XP Home. I have been having some
trouble with the Intel PROSet Wireless software that was installed and was
advised by intel that if a system restore didn't work then I should "perform
a clean Operating System installation using the latest drivers available".

Would this involve wiping the harddrive and reinstalling the entire
operating system with all my utilities, or what would be the best approach
to accomplishing this?

Thanks!...

As an aside, my problem began when I wanted to reinstall Intel ProSet
Wireless software on my system and it didn't load after uninstalling and
then reinstallation. Going to add/remove programs did not bring up any
dialog (should have brought up a window with options to modify, repair or
uninstall). Messing about a lot with it me discover that occasionally I
could get the add/remove programs to work to allow me to do a repair and get
it working (though I don't know what circumstances cause this), but on
reboot it would be back to broken. Intel said that if I couldn't do an
uninstall then to do a system restore (which didn't work) and do the clean
OS installation failing that. So I am somewhere in-between attempting an
uninstall again and doing the clean OS installation thing. All this has been
extremely upsetting.

As a further aside, could anyone tell me what the difference is connecting
wirelessly through Intel PROSet software compared to the regular windows way?

Thanks,
Ben

There's no real advantage that I can see. Windows does the job perfectly
well. If your system hasn't become unstable and the problem is simply an
inability to use the intel wireless manager, I wouldn't bother with a clean
install.

No advantage that I know of either, we generally removed this from Dell
laptops. Afterwards you need to make sure that the Wireless Zero service is
self-starting, so the Windows applet loads.

Some wireless utils do give you additional functionality, but this is one I
wouldn't bother with.

Yes. By definition, a "clean" installation entails first formating the
hard drive to erase all of it's contents, thus starting out with a
"clean" hard drive.

.... or what would be the best
approach to accomplishing this?

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.
