how to network 2 sep ADSL accounts

Hi,
Not sure how/where to post but -
Can anyone help with how to setup a local network with the following:
I have 2 desktops in seperate rooms. Both have ethernet ADSL on separate
phone lines.
Both with XP pro and use a 4 port ethernet ADSL modem/router.
How can I setup a network so I can share files between the computers?
I have tried connectring a ethernet cable joining the desktops but with no
success.
I can setup a network with sharing a ADSL connection but I need each room to
have a seperate account.
Will adding 2 more network cards and connecting the PCs with a crossover
cable work?
Any help appreciated.

You could locate a router which does allow the connection to two ADSL units.
I found such a unit off the web 3 year ago, but never needed to get one.
