how to know if comp is clean?

I have been using a new reconditioned comp (win xp pro-ie7) on the Internet
for a few weeks, and a couple of days ago, I had "threat detected" messages
come up for 3 days, when running AVG 7.5 and lavasoft ad-aware. I sent the
infected files to the virus vault.

Now there are 12 infected-unhealable files there of which 6 are sys files.

What I would like to know is: how to know if the comp is free from virus,
and how to restore the sys files?

I have looked through the help section but don't see a solution to this.

P.S I thought XP and IE 7 were very secure. I had been using win 78se with
ie 6 for 4 years with no virus threats!!

* that you knew of...

You need to be very specific at this point about WHAT infected you and which
files were quarantined you think you need back.. ;-)

And to add to that, no software can protect you completely. Although the
newer operating system and newer version of IE *are* more secure, neither
is perfect, and you still need to exercise caution in everything you do.
