How to implement transparent toolbar images

It seems that toolbar support exists for the Compact
Framework, but not the ability to have transparency in
the imageList which is attached to the toolbar.

Does anyone know how to implement transparency for images
used in the toolbar control?

..NET Compact will automatically set the background color
of a 'clicked' toolbar button to WHITE, which looks ugly
if you can't use transparency.
