Crucial have a little download thing on their website.
http://www.crucial.com/

That'll tell you what type of RAM you have.

You can use for instance CPU-Z or discontinued Everest Home Edition (still
findeable to download) to find out what RAM sticks You are exactly using.

CPU-Z

http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php

CPU-Z is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main
devices of your system.

CPU (...)
Mainboard (...)
Memory
* Frequency and timings.
* Module(s) specification using SPD (Serial Presence Detect)

I second this recommendation. It's what I used when I added RAM to my
system.

It's under 'Memory modules'. If you need more detailed info than that, then
Belarc does not seem to provide it.

If you know your system model # or motherboard model number you can use
Crucial's memory advisor.

RightMark Memory Analyzer (RMMA)

Download RAR archive or self extracting RAR archive.

To avoid troubles please read Readme.txt carefully.

You will also want to ID your motherboard. From that you can ID what
memory works with that motherboard.

You can find out how to ID your motherboard here:

http://www.wimsbios.com

You can then determine what memory to buy here:

http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

There are other URL's that you can use, these just happen to be two that
I found after a quick search.

Another possibility is the Belarc Advisor. This free program will give you
a complete look at your computer, along with all the programs in it. It'll
tell you how much memory you have, what type, and how many spaces there are
for additional memory.

Where does it tell you what "type" of memory that you have fitted?

"Memory Modules" in the right column

256 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'RIMM_A' has 128 MB
Slot 'RIMM_B' has 128 MB

Yabbut - that's just how big it is, not what kind
(speed/buffering/error correction).

Everest gives that info, though -- under Motherboard>SPD -- and
whilst Lavalys has discontinued the free "Home" version, it still
appears to be available at majorgeeks:
