How to I verify my anti-virus software is not compromised?

It could be paranoia, but I'd like to verify that my Norton 2003 (fully up
to date along with NPF 2003) is functioning properly and hasn't been
compromised in any way. I've had a few emails lately which I'm sure have had
virus attachments (which of course I've not run) but NAV hasn't identified a
virus in them. I've also had the "NT AUTHORITY" shutdown message a couple
of times indicating MSBlaster, but I've downloaded and run the removal tool
and it's detected nothing.

How can I verify my anti-virus software is working correctly?

Thanks,

Si

Use the eicar.com test file :

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

NAV should alert on this. It's harmless so go ahead and click away on
it or try to copy it. You can d/l the zipped version or compress the
file in various ways yourself if you want to run tests along these
lines as well.

To install the NAV updates and to run the removal tool isn't enough.
Did you run Windows Update and install everything that appeared as
"important update"? Unless you do that, your computer will still be
vulnerable.

I'd go to Kaspersky (which I think is awesome) and d/l a trial. If it
doesn't find anything, great.. if it does, consider switching! I had
nortons because of the name and all sorts of fugged up s'it was happening
on my computer that it missed. I suspected that I had a virus and
norton's was missing it.I looked around and tried Kaspersky ( I think
they have a trial version you can use) and found 2 virii and a trojan on
my main computer and 1 weak virus that changed the my search engine
setting in I.E. on another puter..

ps: Norton's picked up on eicar with no problem when I tried it and yet
still missed the real deal!As far as I'm concerned Norton sucks when it
comes to a.v.

Oh, Kaspersky also has an online thing where you can upload suspect files
and as long as they are total under 1 meg it'll scan em for you and let
you know.Hope that helps..

There's also the free Antidote which uses the KAV scan engine which is
useful for finding malware other av products miss. My web site has a
link.
